Why “writer in the rough”?

If I say, “Diamond!”, what image do you imagine? An uneven, glassy rock or a sparkling gem?

Personally, I have never pictured anything less than a dazzling jewel. The long and tedious process of refining never even flirts with my mind.

Now say, “Writer!”. Visions of book signings amidst stacks of brilliant masterpieces consume your thoughts, right?

Ah ha! See? A writer and diamond have much in common.
